Laura Heyrman by Volleyball.it

Review by Robert J. Maxwell, posted 20 May 2017

*** This review may contain spoilers ***

Anyone watching this is likely to develop a severe case of déja vu. But that's okay because you really HAVE seen it all before in one iteration or another. The Thunderbirds are members of the 45th infantry division of the National Guard, mostly from Oklahoma. Their shoulder patch is a bright red square, balanced on one of its points, with a golden wingspread bird on it, a symbol of the Navaho Indians. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes to capture the caricatured characters and dope out their destinies.

There is the handsome young lead, John Derek, who will survive. There is best friend (and rival for girl friend) John Drew Barrymore who surely must die to make up for blotch on the family's escutcheon and to get out of Derek's pursuit of the girl. (One thing had me puzzled: "the girl" was not Mona Freeman. There's the elitist snob who must learn to get down in the ruck with the rest of them. Sammy Jacobs, whose Mamma gives him a mezzuzah and sends him a salami, may not be long for this world. This time, the New York wiseguy is from Bayonne, New Jersey. The tough sergeant -- Gene Evans, with a voice like a coffee grinder -- will survive unless he must be gotten out of the way so Derek can take over his position. The tiny, goggle-eyed, plump clerk is probably going to make it. If skinny, dumb Texan Slim Pickens -- he's the guy with no mandible -- makes it, that's okay but he may just turn out to be cannon fodder.

Barton MacClane is the sadistic three striper. Ward Bond is the stern but fair top sergeant. I'd be surprised if he didn't make it. Assembled church goers sing "America the Beautiful" and, later, the boys at religious services sing "Battle Hymn of the Republic," even Sammy Jacobs tucked away in the back and wearing his tallit. When the training camp banter and grabass are over, the unit ships out.

All of this is during the first twenty minutes or so. Then you're forced to stick with this dusted-off World War II story to see if your guesses turned out to be correct. The dialog keeps pace with the martial musical score. "It's quiet out there -- too quiet." "Waiting is tougher than doing." (Not in my experience.) "Training doesn't prepare you for the sight of your first dead man." "Anyone who tells you he's not scared, he's a liar." "We run short of everything -- but guts." "Atta boy! Hit 'em right in their swastikas!" The invasion of Sicily. They're in Palermo. No mention of General Patton. A Dear John letter arrives in the form of a record. It's from the girl back home, and she's chosen John Drew Barrymore over Derek.

I was aghast. What the hell was John Derek going to do NOW? But then Derek is ordered to drive "a lieutenant" to the nearest hospital. The "shavetail" turns out to be lovely Mona Freeman and everything was back in place. They don't exchange more than two dozen words before they fall into each other's arms and start necking. The next time they meet they're calling each other "darling." It strains credulity. Of course it happens to me all the time but Derek doesn't have my pheromones.

Next they're in Anzio, which turns out to be a spot of bother, and then Rome, with no mention of such personages as Mark Clark or Lucien Truscott. Not that it matters in this kind of story, but the leader of the US Army in Italy was now General Mark Clark, who always saw to it that the press referred to "Mark Clark's Fifth Army." After the breakout from Anzio, he allowed an entire German army to withdraw unmolested while he made a mad dash for Rome so he could be the first to conquer the Eternal City. His celebrity was short. A few days later the Allies landed at Normady.

The 45th division was in the thick of things in Europe: Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, the southern coast of France ("the champagne campaign"), across the Rhine, liberating a concentration camp, and then being demobilized. They took a lot of casualties, including an uncle of mine. The movie shows no such heroism. It sticks to the rules. Virtually no combat scenes that aren't clips of newsreel footage. The commanding office at Republic Pictures was Herbert J. Yates, a notorious skinflint and cheat. This production reflects his values.

The star’s children broke the news in a statement uploaded to Twitter, noting that Moore passed away after a “short but brave battle with cancer.”

Coach Nicola Negro

Indre Sorokaite e Beatrice Parrocchiale

Raffaella Calloni and Caterina Bosetti di volleyball.it

Raphaela Folie by Imoco

Saratoga Chip

The potato chip, or Saratoga Chip as it was first called, was invented in 1853 by Chef George Crum at Moon Lake House, Saratoga Springs, New York. Chef Crum was trying to please a demanding guest who was badgering him that his home fried potatoes were not sliced thin enough. Crum decided to show him and the other guests. So he sliced the next batch with a razor -- and thus the potato chip was born.

About 27 pounds of chips are produced from 100 pounds of potatoes (potatoes are 80% water). It takes four pounds of raw potatoes to make one pound of potato chips.

The basic types of potatoes are Atlantic, Snowden, Dakota Pearls and Dakota Crisps.

The potato or tuber is a storage organ that is developed from the swelling at the end of an underground stem. Potatoes that are harvested before they mature are often called "new potatoes" or "early potatoes." We chippers are always happy when the "new potatoes" crop comes in from Florida. "New potatoes" almost always are an appetizing soft golden color. These potatoes have a thin tender skin, which is easily rubbed off during harvesting and handling. They will discolor and wither rapidly at skinned places and are more susceptible to decay than mature potatoes. For this reason the early crops from Florida and North Carolina are not suitable for long storage and must be used right from the field. Typically, potatoes from Florida are ready for harvest in the early spring, then move to North Carolina in June, and then follow the growing season north. In July and August one can find decent potatoes in Pennsylvania, Missouri, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois; these are considered field potatoes.

Some field potatoes are used September through March, but most storage potatoes (or "late crop") from Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and North and South Dakota are used. These potatoes aren't harvested until the vines are mature or dying and the potato skin is firm and tough. These potatoes are not easily injured, and if free of serious diseases and stored under proper conditions, they will not change very much for three to six months.

Potato growers in the Red River Valley of North Dakota are the largest producers of "chipping potatoes" in the world. Much of the winter supply comes from this area.

About 43 million pounds of potatoes are used annually. That's about 12 acres of harvested potatoes per day. These days, more than half of the potatoes come from southcentral Pennsylvania. The balance in winter comes from Florida, Virginia and the Carolinas.

Potatoes are delivered to the Husman's Snack Foods manufacturing plant by truck. When a shipment arrives a sample is taken and tested before unloading. The potatoes are tested for defects, cooking quality, and size before we unload them. If the potatoes meet Husman's standards they're unloaded and put into large wooden crates.

The first step in making potato chips is the destoner. The destoner cycles the potatoes through water to remove rocks and other external debris. Next the potatoes tumble through a peeler (abrasive rollers with water), to remove most of the peels. After the peeler the potatoes are inspected to ensure that adequate peel has been removed and that the potatoes are free of defects. We remove any unsatisfactory potatoes.

The potatoes then go to a slicer assembly that cuts them into chips of the required thickness. The chips then go through a washer where excess scrap and starch is removed. The slices are blown off to remove extra water and conveyed to the automatic fryer and uniformly cooked to a golden crispness. They spend 2 to 3 minutes in the fryer.

The chips are salted immediately at the outfeed of the fryer. The chips then go through an Optical-Sorter that can pick out and remove any defective chips. The individual seasonings are then applied to the chips and the chips are sent to the packaging machines where they are packaged by weight and put into cartons for shipping.

Husman's chips have 0% cholesterol because they are fried in vegetable oil and not in animal fat (lard).

Less than 1/10th of a teaspoon of salt is on 1 oz. of chips. The salt is on the surface of the chip and therefore gives a saltier taste to it.

Some potato chip manufacturers wash their raw chip slices in hot water, approximately 180 degrees F. This method results in lighter color chips by removing some of the sugars. Since this treatment will leach any soluble material from the slices in addition to sugars, it usually results in some loss in flavor and increased oil absorption in the chip. For this reason we do not use this method when we make Husman's chips.

The potato is the storage organ for nutrients manufactured by the potato plant. The reason some potatoes produce brown potato chips is due to the high sugar content in these potatoes. During growth, sugars are converted to starch. When a chipping potato is mature the sugar level of the potato is below 2%. After harvesting if the potato isn't stored or transported properly these starches can revert back to sugar. The secret to good chip color is that the chipping potatoes must be mature at harvest and not ruined from harvest to processing.

The scrap chips and snacks products that are picked out from inspection tables are recycled by sending them to composting and digesting operations.

Husman's always has an eye for recycling, being one of the first to use returnable cartons for product distribution.

Husman's popcorn popper holds 300 pounds of popcorn per batch. That's enough to make about 550 6.5 oz. bags. You'll have to get the drink refills on your own.

Ashley Graham and Jourdan Dunn

The 29-year-old model adorned an ivory and red floor-length, figure-hugging, one-shoulder gown to the star studded event in New York earlier this month, where the theme for the evening was Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons, and the brunette beauty has admitted her attire proved problematic when she needed to go to the bathroom.

Speaking on 'The Wendy Williams Show', which will air on Thursday (05.18.17), the catwalk icon said: "I didn't know how to go to the bathroom in it."

And the fashion muse had to rely on fellow model Jourdan Dunn to be her "bathroom buddies" and help one another wriggle out of their dresses when they needed a quick toilet break.

She added: "I was sitting next to Jourdan [Dunn] ... She was like, 'Look, we can be bathroom buddies.' We'd go to the bathroom and we'd help each other out of our dresses."

And not only did Ashley's dress make it difficult for her to go to the loo, but it also made it difficult her for to enjoy a beverage because it was "so heavy".

She explained: "I couldn't drink because my dress was so heavy."

Meanwhile, Ashley - who signed to Wilhelmina Models in 2001 - has revealed she has to thank her mother for her career because she encouraged her to continue with her future in the fashion industry, although the Nebraska-born star wanted to give up.

Speaking previously, Ashley said: "Everything was about exterior, everything was about weight for me.

"I really had to step back and say, 'OK, am I looking for love through sex? Am I looking for love through food? Am I looking for love through the affirmation of fashion people who don't understand my body?'. I had to really have, like, a come to Jesus moment.

"I said, 'I can't do it anymore, I'm coming home. This is it,' and she said, 'No, no, you're not coming home. Your body is going to change someone's life and New York needs you. The fashion industry needs you,' and I stayed."

Ms. Susan Sarandon

The 70-year-old actress is "shocked" she has reached the milestone, which she has described as a "strange moment" in her life, and she has claimed the "secret" to having younger-looking skin is "staying engaged", being inquisitive and to have a "good time" without smoking.

The flame-haired beauty told Vogue.co.uk: "I'm shocked to be 70 myself! I keep thinking I'm younger, and I feel that inside! It was kind of a strange moment, that milestone.

"The secret - I mean, honestly, I think staying engaged and staying curious and having a good time is really a lot of it. And not smoking is really important."

The 'Stepmom' star also think staying hydrated and avoiding anything too extreme has benefited her complexion, as well as genetics.

She added: "I think that staying hydrated and not doing anything too extreme, too... Also I'm not really a drinker. I think a little bit of wine in moderation is probably good, but I think really if you drink heavily it's not great. But I guess good genes. I thank my mother."

The L'Oreal spokesperson regularly asks the cosmetics company to send her new products to sample, although she relies on the brand's Age Perfect Golden Age Soin Jour Rose moisturizer.

She said: "For me a lot of it is all about moisturizing. The new L'Oréal Paris moisturizer - Age Perfect Golden Age Soin Jour Rose - is so luxurious. I'm really fond of that. As you get older the key is that it really penetrates but isn't greasy.

"That's a great advantage of working with L'Oréal, to be able to see things when they first come out. I always ask them to send new things my way. A lot of the lipsticks are really beautiful, really fun colors. I love the one that I've been wearing here in Cannes."

Mr. Chris Cornell We Salute You

The Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman sadly passed away on Wednesday night (17.05.17), a representative for the rocker has confirmed.

A tweet by iHeart Radio's KFI AM 640 FM reads: "A representative says rocker Chris Cornell has died at the age of 52."

The news will no doubt come as a shock for his fans and loved ones as a few hours ago he performed a sold-out concert with Soundgarden at Fox Theatre in Detroit, Michigan.

A tweet on the star's official Twitter reads: "#Detroit finally back to Rock City!!!! @soundgarden #nomorebulls*it (sic)"

Cornell's death is reported to have been "sudden and unexpected" and his family including his wife, Vicky Karayiannis, have asked for privacy during this difficult time as medical professionals examine her husband's cause of death, which is as yet unknown.

Cornell was famous for writing and performing the Grammy-nominated Bond theme 'You Know My Name' from 2006's 'Casino Royale' starring Daniel Craig as 007.

Soundgarden - also comprised of Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron and Ben Shepherd - were due to continue their North American tour and travel to Columbus, Ohio on Friday (19.05.17), with the run ending in Oklahoma on May 27.

Soundgarden split in 1997 and reunited in 2010, their last record was 'King Animal' in 2012.

During their 13-year hiatus, Cornell went through a dark period and was admitted to rehab for alcohol addiction.

Although, in an interview in 2012, he said that he would have ended up there anyway.

He said: "It's something that would have happened even if Soundgarden had stayed together.

"It was a long slow slide and then a long slow recovery, but there was self-discovery too.

"For me it was mostly alcohol - from my late teens until my late thirties."

Valentina Diouf, Federica Stufi, Beatrice Berti, Ilaria Spirito and Beatrice Negretti

Valentina Diouf, Federica Stufi, Beatrice Berti, Ilaria Spirito, Beatrice Negretti.

Prossimamente saranno comunicati i nuovi arrivi: restate connessi!

Cannes Classics 2017

The program of Cannes Classics 2017 will be dedicated for its most part to the history of the Festival.

Almost fifteen years ago, when the relationship between contemporary cinema and its own memory was about to be shaken by the emergent arrival of digital technology, the Festival de Cannes created Cannes Classics, a selection that displays the work of valorisation of heritage cinema carried out by the production companies, the right-holders, the cinematheques or the national archives around the world.

Being now an essential component of the Official Selection and a presence of the history of cinema which inspired several international festivals, Cannes Classics showcases vintage films and masterpieces of the history of cinema in restored prints.
Because Cannes is also devoted with the mission of enchanting the audience of today's relationship with the memory of cinema, Cannes Classics puts the prestige of the biggest festival of the world at the service of the cinema rediscovered, accompanying all the new exhibitions: releasing in movie theaters, on VOD or on DVD/Blu-ray editions of the great works of the past.

The program of the 2017 edition of Cannes Classics consists of twenty-four screenings, one short film and five documentaries. The films are screened as wanted by the right-holders, in DCP 2K or DCP 4K, and L'Atalante by Jean Vigo that Gaumont wished to screen in 35mm.

The films selected for this 2017 edition will focus mostly on the history of Cannes. They come from nations that have allowed the Festival de Cannes to become a land of cinematographic discoveries: Hungary, Lebanon, Serbia, United Kingdom, Italy, United States, Israel, Mauritania, Niger, Poland, Switzerland, Japan, Spain, the Netherlands, Canada, Belgium and Australia. Many countries which also consider that safeguarding heritage cinema is essential.

The films will be screened in the Palais des Festivals, Salle Buñuel or Salle du Soixantième, in attendance of those who have restored them and, if they are still among us, of those who have directed them.

Chiude Sloetjes: 25-21.

Congrats to all of you. God bless.

The Spencer Davis Group - Gimme Some Lovin'

Composed by Mr. Steve Winwood, Mr. Spencer Davis and Mr. Muff Winwood

Hey!
Well my temperature's rising
And my feet left the floor
Crazy people knocking
'cause they want some more
Let me in baby
I don't know what you got
You better take it easy
This place is hot
And i'm
So glad you made it
So glad you made it
i want
Gimme some loving
Gimme some loving
Gimme some loving everyday

Hey!
My head's a-spinning
And I'm floating to sound
Too much is happening
'cause you're not around
It's been a hard day
And nothing went too good
I'm gonna relax
Like everybody should

And i'm
So glad you made it
So glad you made it
i want
Gimme some loving
Gimme some loving
Gimme some loving everyday

Hey!
I feel so good
Everything is getting higher
You better take some time out
‘Cause the place is on fire
Better stop baby
I have so much to do
We made it, baby
And it happened to you

And i'm
So glad we made it, so glad we made it
gimme some loving, everyday gimme some loving
every night
Gimme some loving, oohh gimme some loving
gimme some of your loving
everyday
hehey baby oohhh
gimme some of your loving babe
ooohh everyday
gimme some of your loving babe
gimme some of your loving babe
