Supercoppa maschile (29 ottobre)

Sada Cruzeiro - Brasil Kirin Campinas 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-20)
Sada Cruzeiro: William Arjona, Evandro Guerra; Leal, Rodrigo Leao "Rodriguinho"; Isac Santos, Simon; Serginho (L); Fernando Kreling "Cachopa", Leonardo Ferreira do Nascimento "Leozinho", Filipe Ferraz. All: Marcelo Mendez.
Brasil Kirin Campinas: Rodrigo Leme "Rodriguinho", Rodrigo Pinto "Rivaldo"; Ygor Duarte "Cearà", Diogo Silva; Mauricio Souza, Vinicius Siqueira "Vini"; Tiago Brendel (L); Juleandro Rocha "Jotinha", Bruno Temponi, Matheus Cunda. All: Horacio Dileo.

Congrats! God bless.

SAVINO DEL BENE SCANDICCI

SAVINO DEL BENE SCANDICCI – LIU JO NORDMECCANICA MODENA 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 25-14, 25-17)

SAVINO DEL BENE SCANDICCI: Crisanti 5, Zago 13, Havlickova 1, Ferreira Da Silva 17, Loda 11, Merlo (L), Cruz, Arrighetti 2, Meijners 20, Rondon 2. Non entrate Moreno Pino, Giampietri, Scacchetti. All. Chiappafreddo
LIU JO NORDMECCANICA MODENA: Brakocevic Canzian 15, Belien 13, Valeriano, Heyrman 5, Leonardi (L), Marcon 7, Bosetti 3, Ferretti 1, Petrucci 1, Ozsoy 10, Bianchini 6. Non entrate Kreklow, Garzaro. All. Micelli.
ARBITRI: Bellini, Rolla.
NOTE – durata set: 32?, 34?, 26?, 26?; tot: 118?

Ferretti nuovamente in campo. Time-out Chiappafreddo. Non passa nemmeno Arrighetti, + 6 Liu-Jo. Zago e Loda riducono il distacco 11-7. Esce Arrighetti per Crisanti. Ferretti fa girare Modena: 15-8. Meijners 21-20 in diagonale. Ancora Zago: 23 a 21.

Coach Chiappafreddo chiama il time out sul 21 a 12.

4-3. Da Silva, ancora, lei in primo tempo: 6-3. Brakocevic, non si arrende, parallela lunga -3 Modena. Pipe di Flo, 9 a 5. Time-out Micelli. Adenizia Da Silva 16 a 11.

Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Kelly Reilly plus Others

by Justin Kroll

Though his “Avengers” film begins production in February, Robert Downey Jr. is still focused on getting his next “Sherlock Holmes” movie off the ground.

Sources tell Variety that Warner Bros., Village Roadshow and Team Downey have selected a writers’ room that includes “Guardians of the Galaxy” scribe Nicole Perlman, “Baywatch” scribe Justin Malen, “Rogue One” writer Gary Whitta, “Tomb Raider” Geneva Dworet-Robertson and “Snowden” screenwriter Kieran Fitzgerald to help shape the script and story for next installment.

The previous two films both brought in more than $500 million worldwide. The threequel has always been a priority for the studio but Downey’s schedule has been busy considering his commitment to playing Tony Stark (Iron Man) in the Marvel universe.

Downey is attached to star and Jude Law, who played Watson in the previous pics, is also expected to return. Guy Ritchie, who directed the first two films, is expected to return to direct.

Susan Downey, Dan Lin, Joel Silver and Lionel Wigram are attached to produce.

The writers room concept first commonly used in TV, has become a trend more studios are using for films, especially when it comes to shaping universes. Paramount set one up for “Transformers” and Universal is doing something similar with their classic monster universes.

This is a rare case in which a room is being set up for just one film. However one source said that in this case it makes sense to gather a good group, rather than have several writers rewrite or polish, which happens to films often in the development process.

Perlman is not only is penning Marvel’s first female superhero film “Captain Marvel” but is also on board to write the “Pokemon” movie “Detective Pikachu” for Legendary. Malen already has a history with the studio having recently written the comedy “Bastards” for WB and also has “Office Christmas Party” which opens in December. Besides “Rogue One”, Whitta has a handful of pics in development including “The War Magician” with Benedict Cumberbatch. Fitzgerald is currently working on “Cascade” for Fox.

Dworet-Robertson has also written “Dungeons and Dragons” for Warner Bros. as well.

Perlman is repped by CAA and Management 360, Malen is repped by Verve and DMG Entertainment, Whitta is repped by UTA and Circle of Confusion, Dworet-Robertson is repped by WME and Management 360 an Fitzgerald is repped by WME.

That's great. Hopefully, Noomi Rapace and Kelly Reilly will be part of it.
God bless.

Mr. Michael Massee We Salute You

The actor- who accidentally fatally shot 'The Crow' co-star Brandon Lee on the set of the 1994 film - passed away this week from undisclosed causes, at the age of 61.

Anthony Delon - Massee's co-star in the 2014 French TV series 'Interventions' - first announced the news on Instagram, writing "R.I.P. my friend Michael. You were 'five seconds away from a clean getaway' (sic)."

And Michael's agent later confirmed the news to Variety.

His 'Rizzoli & Isles' co-star Angie Harmon tweeted: "My heart is heavy to hear of his passing. He was IMMENSELY talented & had the kindest soul. I am privileged to have known him. #RIPMichaelM (sic)."

And Jon Cassar, an executive producer for '24', wrote: "Sad to hear of the passing of Michael Massee who played Ira Gaines, 24's first villain in season #1 RIP (sic)."

Michael's part as Funboy in 'The Crow' was only his second ever feature role but it was to end in tragedy.

On March 31, 1993, the crew improperly prepared a gun for a scene in which Funboy shoots Lee's character Eric Draven, accidentally creating a live round.

Massee fired the gun, shooting Lee in the stomach and the actor passed away in hospital later that day after unsuccessful surgery.

Speaking about the devastating tragedy, Michael - who reportedly never watched the movie - said: "I don't think you ever get over something like that."

He took a year off from acting but returned to take on roles in movies including 'Tales From The Hood', 'Seven', 'Lost Highway', 'Amistad', 'The Amazing Spider-Man' and 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'.

He also had parts on TV in 'Fringe', 'Supernatural', 'CSI', 'House', and 'Flash Forward'.

Michael is survived by his wife, Ellen Massee, and their two children.

RIP

Toy Story plus Others by Dominique Haikel

The movie theater was the place to be back in 1995 (and Blockbuster too, obviously), as it was the year so many of your favorite films debuted. We're talking about everything from Pocahontas to Clueless and everything in between. Yes, you are that old. Want to feel even more ancient? Toy Story was released this year as well. We know, right? Since then, we've followed Woody, Buzz and the gang through Toy Story 2 and 3, and even watched our favorite astronaut in Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins. All these years later, in case you haven't yet heard, we're being blessed with Toy Story 4, but don't get too excited yet. The release date is set for 2019, which is an aggressively long time away. Actual light years, to be exact. Also, is anyone else wondering if TS4 could get any more depressing than the last installment?

How much more can you put our fragile hearts through, Pixar?! Anyway. Deep breaths. Since 2019 is so far away, and many things can and will change from now until then, we decided to get a little nostalgic. In honor of the future film, we're taking a look at all of the things that were popular back when Toy Story was released. The year, as we said, was 1995. Selena Quintanilla had passed, Ace of Base and Boys II Men were popular, and Courtney Cox was People mag's Most Beautiful Person in the World. While you were busy watching the final season of Full House, the O.J. Simpson trial was making headlines.

Read on to see what else was happening the year Toy Story came out in theaters.

1. Most Popular TV Shows. The number one show was E.R., followed by Seinfeld and Friends, according to Nielsen Media Research. That's just about as '90s as you can possibly get.

2. Most popular kids toys. If you were a '90s kid, you would remember the joy of trading Pogs, along with the agony of losing your favorites if you decided to 'play for keeps.' Another insane craze was Beanie Babies, which peaked as collectibles in this year.

3. The voice of Woody took home an Academy Award. The Tom Hanks classic Forrest Gump took home Best Picture in 1995. Hanks also won Best Actor in a Leading Role for his part in the film.

4. MTV was still playing music videos. The good old days. TLC's ultimate jam "Waterfalls" won the MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year.

5. Brad Pitt hadn't yet met Angelina Jolie. He was People's Sexiest Man Alive that year, however.

6. Everyone went nuts for the "Macarena." This viral dance trend happened long before any shaking of Laffy Taffy's or whipping of Nae Nae's.

7. Technology was on fire. Both eBay and Amazon debuted this year, and online shopping has never been the same. Oh, did we mention Match.com launched too? Thanks, 1995!

8. Kids shows were at peak weirdness. Gems like Goosebumps and Pinky and the Brain started up this year, according to IMDb. What a time to be alive.

9. Junk food would never be the same. In 1995 Pizza Hut introduced its coveted Stuffed Crust Pizza. The blue M&M was also rolled out, which replaced the tan (what?). Last but not least, the miracle that is the Starbucks Frappuccino was invented. Can you even imagine a time without them?

10. Hillary Clinton was the First Lady. While her hubby Bill was Mr. President.

My, how the tables have turned!

Robin Roberts by Bruna Nessif

Get ready for some tears.

Robin Roberts has openly discussed her battle with cancer and bone marrow disease in the past, and even confessed that there was a point when she felt "completely alone," but she can't deny the wonderful assistance she got from some special nurses.

During a special nurses' hour episode of Harry with Harry Connick Jr. (airing tomorrow), Roberts was surprised with a special appearance by two nurses who helped treat her during the Good Morning America co-anchor's 30-day stint in the hospital.

But not before Roberts emotionally recalled her time in treatment.

"Invaluable," she said of the nurses. "I mean, like I said, they know before anybody else, doctors included, what's working and what's not working. There was one nurse in particular—I mean, they were all fantastic, I can name them all—but Jenny [Tran]…my mother passed away shortly before my transplant, my bone marrow transplant. And my mom had been there when I got any kind of boo-boo, and here I was going through this kind of situation, and she passed away," Roberts began to explain.

Tears began to well up in her eyes as she continued, "And there was a time when I was in my room, I sent everybody away, and I was in my room, and I just felt like I'm slipping away. I just couldn't."

She explained, "I kept hearing this voice, ‘Robin! Robin! Robin!' And suddenly, I open my eyes, and it's Jenny, my nurse Jenny. She's looking at me. That was my mother's voice. I am convinced, when I was hearing that, even though it was Jenny, it was my mother's voice I was hearing. And that was Jenny."
Well, whaddya know? Jenny and nurse Tonya Samuel were both there to surprise Robin!

After some hearty hugs, Robin expressed her gratitude for what they do. "Thank you, thank you for being our lifeline. Thank you for being there, not only for us, but for our caregivers, our loved ones. We know…unsung heroes? Not today. We are singing your praises."

Last year, Roberts opened up for Humans of New York to reveal the overwhelming feeling of isolation she experienced while going through chemotherapy, telling the story that she shared on Harry.

"Before my bone marrow transplant, I had to have my immune system completely wiped out with chemotherapy," she wrote. "I went into the hospital thinking that I was going to do a lot of reading and watch old movies and catch up on work. One thing that I didn't fully anticipate was the isolation that I'd feel."

She continued, "I knew I'd be physically isolated. The doctors and nurses wore masks so all I could see were their eyes. And nobody touched me unless they were administering medicine. But the pain and weakness brought me to a place where I felt completely alone."

Eventually she says the pain got so bad and she got so weak that she could barely even formulate a thought.

"At one point I actually gave up. I made everyone leave my room, even my partner, and I started slipping away," she recalled the dark moment. "I hallucinated my mother's voice calling my name. I heard it very distinctly. But when I opened my eyes—it was my nurse Jenny that was calling me. At the point of my greatest isolation, it was almost as if my mother used Jenny's voice to call me back."

Since her recovery she's returned to work, become active with Be the Match—which helps raise awareness and funds for patients in need of bone marrow transplants—and gone public with her relationship to partner Amber Laign.

All the best. God bless.

Bolzano: posted Oct. 24, 2016

Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky (Not suitable for kids)

Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky by Zach Johnson, posted Oct. 24, 2016

Heard the rumor that Chris Hemsworth's marriage is in trouble?

Neither had he until late Sunday night. The Oct. 31 issue of Australia's Woman's Day, however, claims Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky's relationship is "on the rocks," as they have been "living separate lives." According to a source, "They've decided they need space, and they've been taking a little break from each other." Hemsworth has been shooting Thor: Ragnarok in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, while Pataky flew to Spain last month with their kids. The bottom line, the tabloid said, is that the couple's marriage "may not be as picture perfect as it appears."

Oh, the irony—Hemsworth shot down the report using a picture. Posing next to Pataky while overlooking the ocean, he wrote, "Looking for a new wife according to @womansdayaus and other misleading outlets! Honey you still love me right?!" Tagging Pataky, 40, in the Instagram caption, Hemsworth, 33, added, "#thanksfortheheadsup."

Pataky shared another happy photo via Instagram Monday, writing, "Ahora y siempre ! Always and forever!!"

Hemsworth and Pataky married after just a few months of dating in 2010. "It just felt right," Hemsworth recalled on ITV's Good Morning Britain in March. "It made sense. There was no great plan to any of it to be honest, we were on holiday and we said, 'Why don't we get married, too?' And then the next minute...There probably should have been some planning, but it all worked out. Honestly, we had both our families on holiday at the same time, just randomly, and we said, 'This is a good opportunity with everyone together.' So, we just did it."

In the years that followed, the couple welcomed a daughter and twin sons. After living in the United States for several years, the family relocated to Hemsworth's native Australia in 2015. By his own admission, fatherhood is Hemsworth's greatest achievement. "It's not about you anymore, which is refreshing," he said. "My kids are hilarious and insane and crazy. It's good."

Life is good with Pataky, too—as it's always been. "There was no light bulb moment," he told Elle in 2015. "From the first time we met, we just made sense. She's fun. She's outgoing, and she has a sense of humor and a passionate attitude toward life, which is nice to try to keep up with."

Hemsworth learned a lot about what it takes to make a marriage work from watching his own parents over the years. "They had a sense of adventure that I certainly picked up on. We moved around a lot, from Melbourne to the outback to coastal Victoria to Sydney, and it was great; I think that's part of why I'm attracted to this business—there's so much movement and travel," he said. "And my wife is the same, so this style of life suits us. It breaks up the routine."

That's great. All the best. God bless both of you.

Tuscania:

Definitely Not suitable for kids(For Mature Audience only)

A PALMI - Golem Software Palmi e myCicero Pesaro daranno vita all'ultima partita in programma.

Domenica 23 ottobre, ore 17.00

Fenera Chieri - Volley Soverato
ARBITRI: Caretta-Prati

Golem Software Palmi - myCicero Pesaro
ARBITRI: Colucci-Stancati

Omia Cisterna - Lardini Filottrano
ARBITRI: Autuori-Morgillo

Overeating, merry greetings

Piacenza:

'It has been a year since the launch of our residency at the Garrick Theatre. I am immensely proud of the work that has been produced in our creative home, and we have been blessed with a wonderfully supportive audience throughout. We are entering the final chapter of our season with The Entertainer. Its relevance to our own current and social climate is astonishing. I do hope you can join us to experience John Osborne’s landmark play and to celebrate the last production in our season.' Kenneth Branagh

Set against the backdrop of post-war Britain, John Osborneʼs modern classic conjures the seedy glamour of the old music halls for an explosive examination of public masks and private torment. Rob Ashford directs Kenneth Branagh as the unforgettable Archie Rice.

Until 12 November at the Garrick Theatre. The Entertainer will be broadcast live to cinemas across the world on Thursday, 27 October at 19.15pm.

NOTE - Spettatori 1600, durata set: 29', 32', 32', 31'; tot: 124'.

Former Miss Arizona Tasha Dixon said Donald Trump walked into a dress rehearsal for the pageant in 2001 while the contestants were ______ and the women were told to "fawn all over him," according to an interview.

Her comments appear to match up with what Trump told Howard Stern in an interview in 2005 — that he was "allowed to go in" to the dressing area backstage because he was "the owner of the pageant."

Trump has been embroiled in controversy recently for comments he made in 2005 in which he can be heard on tape bragging about groping women. Trump has since apologized for the remarks.

Dixon, who was 18 at the time, said Trump came "strolling right in" during a dress rehearsal for the Miss USA pageant in 200l, she told CBS2/KCAL. She said it was the contestants' introduction to Trump and that the women were _________, in a "very physically vulnerable position."

She said that she decided to speak out after hearing audio released in the past few days of Trump talking about women and that she hadn't heard his interview with Stern until recently. On Sunday CNN reported on it, along with several other interviews in which Trump used crude language when referring to women.

Dixon also said that people who worked for Trump instructed the women to "walk up to him" and "fawn all over him," according to the report.

"Who do you complain to? He owns the pageant," she said. "There's no one there to complain to. Everyone there works for him."

Miss Hawaii 2011, Christy Conway, also said Trump came into the dressing room but said it was just minutes prior to the main event. Conway said she was dressed at the time, and said that, as far as she could tell, others were dressed as well. However, she did say that there were other locations for contestants to change other than where she was when Trump walked in.

Conway, who participated in the same Miss USA pageant as Dixon, said Trump came into the dressing room to wish the contestants luck. She then took a picture with him while wearing her outfit for the opening ceremony.

Trump owned the Miss USA pageant from 1998 to 2015, when it was acquired by talent agency WME-IMG, the pageant announced last year. Coincidentally, the theme of the 2001 pageant was "empowering women," KCAL reported.

Trump's deputy communications adviser, Jessica Ditto, said Dixon's accusations "have no merit and have already been disproven by many other individuals who were there."

"When you see questionable attacks like this magically put out there in the final month of a presidential campaign, you have to ask yourself what the political motivations really are and why the media is pushing it," Ditto said. "Mr. Trump has a fantastic record of empowering women throughout his career, and a more accurate story would be to show how he's been a positive influence in the lives of so many."

Dixon alleged that Trump bought the pageant so he could use his power to "get around beautiful women." She declined to comment on the issue for ABC News.

What Dixon described doesn't stray too far from Trump's comments in a 2005 Stern interview, in which he said he would go backstage at pageants to make sure "everything is good." It was not clear to which pageants he was referring.

"Well, I'll tell you, the funniest is that before a show, I'll go backstage, and everyone's getting dressed and everything else, and you know, no men are anywhere," Trump told Stern, "and I'm allowed to go in because I'm the owner of the pageant and therefore I'm inspecting it."

Trump said that he would ask the women "Is everyone OK?" and that they would be "standing there with no clothes."

"And you see these incredible-looking women, and so, I sort of get away with things like that."

Trump made those comments while responding to a question from Stern about whether he ever had ____ with any contestants from the Miss USA or Miss Universe pageants.

"I never comment on things like that," Trump said, adding later that he wouldn't "want to hurt their feelings."

Mr. Gene Wilder We Salute You

Better late than never.

by TMZ STAFF , posted 8/29/2016

Mr. Gene Wilder -- star of classics like "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory," "Blazing Saddles," "Young Frankenstein" and more -- has died.

The actor passed away Monday from complications from Alzeimer's disease, according to his agent. The rep says Wilder kept his condition secret because he didn't want to force children -- who still called out "there's Willy Wonka" -- to ask questions about the illness.

Wilder was 83.

Wilder was married to Gilda Radner from 1984 until she passed away in 1989. He married again in 1991 to Karen Boyer.

Wilder is survived by a daughter, Katharine -- whom he adopted in 1967 when he married her mother, Mary Joan Schutz.

Gene teamed up with Richard Pryor to make several classic comedies in the '70s and '80s, including "Stir Crazy" -- but his turn as the Jim, Waco Kid is legendary ...

Mr. Dario Fo We Salute You

by John Francis Lane

The dramatist, director, actor, painter and political provocateur Dario Fo has died aged 90. When Fo was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1997, the Swedish committee praised his achievement in reviving the traditions of the giullari – the jester-cum-minstrels of the middle ages who improvised their comedy, jibing at the establishment of the times. His greatest achievement as an actor-author was Mistero Buffo (1969), a reworking of medieval mystery plays, which he performed with masterly skill as a one-man show, making exhilarating use of an onomatopoeic language called grammelot and a mixture of dialects. Other actors have since done their best to emulate him, with varying degrees of success, and his texts will continue to inspire lively theatrical invention.

Fo was born in San Giano, in Lombardy, northern Italy, son of Pina (nee Rota) and Felice. His socialist father was the stationmaster of this small village named after an obscure saint, where trains between Milan and the Swiss borders rarely stopped. Felice was transferred to other stations, including the fishing village of Porto Valtravaglia, where the young Dario heard the locals singing and recounting tales, giving him his first lessons in the art of performance. Pina later published a book of family reminiscences.

At 17, Fo volunteered for Mussolini’s fascist republic army after the armistice of 1943. He said his intention was to protect his father from reprisals, but when he realised that he was getting too involved in military action, he deserted and joined the partisans.

Fo decided to study art in Milan, although once there he turned to architecture. After a nervous breakdown, he was advised by a doctor to pursue a career he felt certain he would enjoy. This brought him into the theatre, where he discovered Eduardo De Filippo, who was making comedy out of the real-life drama of Italy’s postwar years. He learned stagecraft from watching the work of directors such as Giorgio Strehler, and studied Antonio Gramsci, Bertolt Brecht and Vladimir Mayakovsky.

After early success with his own radio programme, Fo collaborated on a satirical revue, Il Dito nell’Occhio (Finger in the Eye), for which the mime Jacques Lecoq coached him, teaching him in particular how to make good use of his gangling arms and legs. A second, more political, musical revue ran into trouble with the censors.

In 1954 Fo married Franca Rame, a showgirl from a Milanese theatrical family, and their son, Jacopo, was born a year later. They co-starred in the film Lo Svitato (The Screwball, 1956), which Fo co-wrote, and in 1958 formed their first theatrical company together. Fo had commercial success with a series of original plays full of ingenious invention. The best was perhaps Isabella, Tre Caravelle e un Cacciaballe (Isabella, Three Sailing Ships and a Con Man, 1963), about a Spanish actor condemned by the inquisition who, at the gallows, performs a play about Christopher Columbus’s expedition. Rame portrayed Queen Isabella and Fo was in sublime form as both the actor and Columbus. Using the simplest of stage effects, he made this one of his most eye-boggling productions.

For a decade, Fo and Rame performed a new show each season, touring throughout Italy. There was always political controversy surrounding his satires but his biggest clash with the censors came when he and Rame were signed up by the broadcaster RAI in 1962 for a major show. RAI officials were soon frightened by some of Fo’s satirical sketches, based around the everyday lives of working-class people, and wanted to make cuts. After weeks of battling, Fo and Rame stormed out. They were not seen again on Italian television for 15 years.

Their work became more and more pungent but no less popular. After their last mainstream show, La Signora è da Buttare (The Lady is for Throwing Out, 1967), the time came for them to stop depending on the convenience of bourgeois theatre. They formed an independent co-operative, Associazione Nuova Scena, but by 1969 had left that to set up their own group, La Comune, based at first in a backstreet hall in Milan. In 1974 they occupied an abandoned pavilion in a public garden, the Palazzina Liberty. It was here that La Comune took an active role in the political and cultural life of Milan in the 1970s.

Throughout that decade, Fo’s international reputation grew. His early plays had already been translated into many languages but there was great interest in the plays of this new period, including Morte Accidentale di un Anarchico (Accidental Death of an Anarchist, 1970), inspired by the mysterious death of Giuseppe Pinelli in a police station after a bomb attack in Milan a year earlier.
Dario Fo impersonating Silvio Berlusconi during a preview of his satirical show L’Anomalo Bicefalo in Bagnacavallo, northern Italy, 2003.

Non Si Paga, Non Si Paga! (Can’t Pay? Won’t Pay!, 1974) starred Rame as a housewife looting a supermarket to protest against the economic crisis. Such works were farces that played to packed audiences in Italy and around the world, including London, where Fo and Rame had several successes in the 1980s, notably at the Riverside Studios.

It was with Mistero Buffo that Fo’s creative progress touched the heights of genius. These stories and parables, including the resurrection of Lazarus and the marriage at Cana, were powered by Fo’s mimicry and linked together by his erudite patter, which left audiences in fits of laughter as he drew parallels between the past and the present. His grotesque interpretation of religious situations, imaginary and real, was considered blasphemous only by the most bigoted of spectators. When Fo and Rame were finally reinstated by Italian television in the late 1970s, and his filmed live performance of Mistero Buffo was transmitted, there was an inevitable outcry from the Vatican.

For Fo, the church was like a theatre. In 1984, when I was the associate producer of a BBC Arena film about his work, we drove with him to Cesenatico on the Adriatic coast, where he had a modest summer home. En route, Fo suddenly stopped the car and led us into a medieval church, where we filmed him singing a Gregorian chant and explaining to us that churches were built for performance.

Fo loved to direct opera. His imaginative 1978 staging at La Scala of Stravinsky’s Histoire du Soldat, with a strong Marxist slant, counts among his most brilliant productions. His reworking of John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera in the early 80s was not as well received, although when Fo took over the role of Peachum it won more favour. Rossini was his favourite composer, and his Italiana in Algeri at the Pesaro festival in 1994 was a triumph. In his 2003 production of Rossini’s Il Viaggio a Reims at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, he hinted at parallels with contemporary rulers in his send-up of Charles X’s coronation.

While Fo was directing The Barber of Seville in Amsterdam in 1987, Rame appeared on a popular Italian TV show to announce that she and he were separating. However, the marriage was soon patched up. Rame had been at Fo’s side in all his political and artistic battles and, when necessary, accepted a secondary role as part of the creative team, though she also wrote her own plays. Her vigorous political stands as a militant leftist were often stronger than Fo’s good-humoured, soapbox-style protests. Receiving his Nobel prize, Fo said that he shared the credit with Rame, as she had been his muse. Even as they subsequently suffered from failing health, they always rediscovered the vigour and inspiration to continue creative work.

Fo continued to enjoy writing plays that jibed at Italian political scandals. In the late 90s, Il Diavolo con le Zinne (The Devil With Boobs) transposed the Tangentopoli (Bribesville) scandal to 16th-century Florence. The corrupt magistrate was played by the Italian stage’s leading traditional actor, Giorgio Albertazzi, who had never hidden his rightwing sympathies. Their collaboration surprised many but they declared they were both anarchists in their own ways. They later made a TV documentary series on the history of the theatre.

Among his next plays, the most controversial was L’Anomalo Bicefalo (The Abnormal Two-Brainer, 2003), a hilarious if cruel satire on Silvio Berlusconi, who is seen recovering his identity after an assassination attempt against him, and Vladimir Putin. The Russian is killed but the Italian is saved after the remains of Putin’s brain are grafted on to his.

Fo then wrote a monologue entitled Peace Mom (2005), dedicated to Cindy Sheehan’s protest after her soldier son was killed in Iraq. It was staged in London with Frances de la Tour. Rame later performed it in a revival of Mistero Buffo at the Verona Arena in 2006.

Fo’s many publications included several lively but erudite manuals on theatre. With Rame’s help, he published a deluxe volume dedicated to Aurelius Ambrosius, the patron saint of Milan. It was in the basilica of Saint Ambrosius in Milan that they had married. Fo’s most impressive literary work was a novelised slice of autobiography about his childhood and adolescence, Il Paese dei Mezaràt (The Land of Half-Rats, 2002). In one section, he described his first visit as a boy to Milan, where he discovered the great painters.

He returned to art for his most illuminating work in his twilight years. As well as exhibiting his own paintings, he won praise for one-man shows, held in public squares or auditoriums and dedicated to the artists he adored. Fo’s own drawings of the works he discussed were projected alongside these lecture-performances, which were broadcast on Italian TV. In Modena he performed in front of the Romanesque cathedral, which has astonishingly theatrical statues and friezes; Fo brought them to life brilliantly, just as he had done with the biblical parables of his Mistero Buffo.

After Rame’s death in 2013, Fo decided the best way to commemorate her was to continue the work they had done together. Still the satirical anarchist, Fo gave public support to the comedian turned politician Beppe Grillo, and later found a new kindred anarchistic spirit in Pope Francis, whom he celebrated with a mock-medieval play about St Francis of Assisi. He astonished even his admirers with his first novel, La Figlia del Papa (The Pope’s Daughter, 2014), in which he recounted his interpretation of the life of Lucrezia Borgia, seeing her as a forerunner of female protesters against corruption in our own time.

Fo is survived by Jacopo.

Mr. Bob Dylan by Brent Lang

Mr. Bob Dylan has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the first American to win the top honor since Toni Morrison in 1993 and the first musician to be recognized.

The 75-year old singer-songwriter was honored for his intricate, evocative lyrics, and for his alternately political and phantasmagoric anthems such as “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Forever Young,” “Like a Rolling Stone,” “Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands,” “Rainy Day Women#12 & 35,” and “The Times They Are a-Changin’.” He joins the ranks of William Faulkner, Gabriel García Márquez, Saul Bellow, William Butler Yeats, and Ernest Hemingway — all previous laureates.

In selecting Dylan, the Nobel committee praised the singer and songwriter “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” His prize comes with 8 million Swedish kronor, which roughly equals $900,000. He will be honored in Stockholm, Sweden, in December.

Dylan’s selection is a break with tradition. Although he has authored a book of poem, a collection of writings and drawings, and an acclaimed memoir, “Chronicles: Volume One,” the bulk of his writing has been the songs he popularized. Typically, the Nobel is awarded to poets or authors of short stories and novels.

Dylan’s victory also comes at the expense of Philip Roth, Ian McEwan, Cormac McCarthy, Thomas Pynchon, and Don DeLillo, all of whom are frequently mentioned among the top contenders for the literary prize.

Dylan’s work draws on myriad influences. He first came to prominence as a folk singer, building on the tradition of Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie. As his career continued, he has worked in many genres, from gospel to country to rock and roll, even releasing an album of Christmas songs.

“Whatever you do. You ought to be the best at it – highly skilled,” Dylan said in a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone. “It’s about confidence, not arrogance. You have to know that you’re the best whether anybody else tells you that or not. And that you’ll be around, in one way or another, longer than anybody else.”

Congrats Mr. Dylan! God bless!
