Amichevoli:MYCICERO - TUUM PERUGIA 4-0 (25-15 25-19 25-14 25-22)

MYCICERO: Degradi 22, Olivotto 11, Pamio 8, Santini 7, Mastrodicasa 11, Di Iulio 3; Ghilardi (L), Gamba (L2), Bussoli 4, Rimoldi 1, Tonello 4. All.: Bertini.
TUUM PERUGIA: Porzio 2, Cruciani 2, Stincone 3, Catena 10, Mearini 4, Minati 12; Chiavatti (L), Santibacci (L2), Tiberi 2, Puchaczewski 1, Di Romano 3, Fastellini 4. All.: Bovari.

Jenna Behrends(Definitely Not suitable for kids)(For Mature Audience only)

Oh, God!

Again, we were reminded by that line- You wanna know why, and there's no why.
Indeed it makes all of us, sad.
God bless both Naomi and Liev including their children.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

by Mike Vulpo

Hollywood just keeps on surprising us when it comes to relationship statuses.

Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts caught pop culture fans off guard Monday afternoon when they announced their split after 11 years together.

"Over the past few months we've come to the conclusion that the best way forward for us as a family is to separate as a couple," the couple said in a statement to E! News. "It is with great love, respect, and friendship in our hearts that we look forward to raising our children together and exploring this new phase of our relationship."

The pair added, "While we appreciate your curiosity and support, we ask the press to be mindful of our children and respect their right to privacy."

While the news may come from a united front, fans were still left asking one big question: What went wrong?

A source told E! News that there wasn't one specific thing that led to the timing of the split. Instead, "it's been a long time coming." Our insider added that they will continue to live in both Los Angeles and New York while they raise their two children.

"They'll still be good friends and co-parents," our source shared.

That mindset has been on display in recent weeks as the pair has stepped out without raising any eyebrows. Earlier this month, the couple was spotted holding hands while attending The Bleeder premiere during the Toronto International Film Festival.

While Liev attended the 2016 Emmys with his oldest son, Naomi documented the duo getting red carpet ready from home on Instagram.

And just this past weekend, social media posts pointed to both Naomi and Liev attending the same birthday party in New York.

"I think people know how gutsy Naomi is, but I don't think people realize how funny she is," Liev once shared to InStyle when praising his leading lady. "I see that side of her every day so I'm glad that everybody else gets to see it."

Mr. Marc Bolan--Misfit

Surplus store misfit
I don't wanna quit
too many times I chickened
and just split

Bill the little misfit
I don't wanna see
pop out pictures
of you and maybe me

Baby why don't you
scream and split
I cant break away
I just seen the light

Wimpy bar misfit
I don't wanna be
Billy the kid
left hanging from no tree

Strung along misfit
I don't wanna see
people put you down
and all I wanna be is free

Baby why don't you
scream and split
I cant break away
I just seen the light

Water bed misfit
I don't wanna be
black and hidden and ridden
most mysteriously

Strung little misfit
I don't wanna see
every scene that's been
and every scene that's liable to be

Baby why don't you
scream and split
I cant break away
I just seen the light

Faith Hill---The secret of life

And you don't get your money back (Definitely Not suitable for kids)(For Mature Audience only)

Gretchen Peters- The Secret Of Life

Couple of guys sitting around drinking
Down at the Starlight Bar
One of 'em says, You know I've been thinking
Other one says, That won't get you too far

He says, This is your life, and welcome to it
It's just working and drinking and dreams
Ad on TV says, Just Do It
Hell if I know what that means

The secret of life is a good cup of coffee
The secret of life is keep your eye on the ball
The secret of life is a beautiful woman
And Marilyn stares down from the bar room wall

You and me, we're just a couple of zeros
Just a couple of down-and-outs
movie stars and football heroes
What have they got to be unhappy about?

So they turn to the bartender, Sam, what do you think?
What's the key that unlocks that door?
Sam don't say nothing, just wipes off the bar
And he pours them a couple more

'Cause the secret of life is in Sam's martinis
The secret of life is in Marilyn's eyes
The secret of life is in Monday Night Football
Rolling Stones records and Mom's apple pie

Sam looks up from his Sunday paper
Says, Boys, you're on the wrong track
The secret of life is there ain't no secret
And you don't get your money back
Hey

The secret of life is getting up early
The secret of life is staying up late
The secret of life is try not to hurry
don't wait
Don't wait

The secret of life is a good cup of coffee
The secret of life is keep your eye on the ball
The secret of life is to find the right woman
The secret of life is nothing at all
Oh, it's nothing at all
The secret of life

Couple of guys sitting around drinking
Down at the Starlight Bar
One of 'em says, You know I've been thinking
Other one says, That won't get you too far
That won't get you too far

Where? posted Sept. 17, 2016

Toronto, Canada, September 17, 2016 - Four of the six teams that claimed medals at the Rio 2016 Olympic competed here this week at the SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals.

FIVB.com asked them: Where do they keep your Olympic medal?

Bruno Schmidt (Brazil, gold medal) - “I am trying to figure out the best spot. Everyone wants to see it. It is a special way to honor the toughest two weeks of my life.”

Robert Meeuwsen (Netherlands, bronze) - “I moved two months ago, and I plan on making a special small closet for it. It is something for me, not for everyone else to see.”

Alexander Brouwer (Netherlands, bronze) - “I plan on building a special frame for it. I built my bed myself, and I plan on using the same wood and combining it with special photos.”

Laura Ludwig (Germany, gold) - “Everyone wants to see it. I have no idea what I’ll do with it next.”

Kira Walkenhorst (Germany, gold) - “When I flew home with it, I put my medal in my carry-on luggage. When security saw the medal in the x-ray, they asked me to pull it, and then we took a picture. It’s heavier than you would think. We’ll see what I end up doing with it.”

April Ross (United States, bronze) - “I have a ceramic moose that hangs above my fireplace. I kept my silver medal on it, and I just put my bronze medal on the other antler.”

Kerri Walsh Jennings (United States, bronze) - “I gave it to my husband, because he earned it. None of this would have been possible without his support and without him stepping up to lead our family and take care of everything when I was gone. He supported me all the way through it. I was planning on giving him a gold, but we ended up winning the bronze, and he was very appreciative of it. I am so grateful to him.”

All the best guys. God bless.

“IT’S BEEN A LONG SEASON”

Toronto, Ontario, Canada, September 21, 2016 - Of the 24 teams who took their shot at winning the record US$100,000 at the SWATCH World Tour Finals this past week, there was one unanimous sentiment that each of the 48 participant expressed.

“It’s been a long season.”

As exciting and dramatic as it was for the fans during the chase for the Rio 2016 Olympics on the FIVB World Tour, it was completely taxing on the players physically, mentally and emotionally.

It was the end of a long run for the players and two Olympians, Josh Binstock of Canada and Nadine Zumkehr of Switzerland, announced their retirements as the World Tour Finals came to a close. German Olympian Britta Buthe revealed her retirement plans, joining her countrywomen Ilke Semmler and Katrin Holtwick, during the German championships following the Olympics.

How grueling was it for some players? Poland’s Bartosz Losiak and Piotr Kantor played in 26 tournaments to get the best Olympic qualifying spot possible. Holtwick/Semmler, plus fellow Germans Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude, played in 25 events and fell just short of a berth in Brazil.

Olympic silver medallists Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas announced their split as a duo following the Olympics after playing in 41 FIVB World Tour tournaments together, winning the 2015 World Championship in The Hague.

Which, in part, brings us to the offseason drama that will lead into the 2017 FIVB World Tour season, a circuit that is certain to have its own flavour as the cycle for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics begins to take shape.

The unprecedented depth of Germany’s women’s programme will be tested.

With the retirement of Zumkehr, the next generation of Swiss stars will be on display, including Zumkehr’s partner, Joana Heidrich. Anouk Verge-Depre, 24, is already an Olympian and the young team of Tanja Huberli and Nina Betschart is ready to take center stage after announcing their arrival with a bronze-medal finish in the A1 Major Klagenfurt.

The United States teams are also certain to undergo changes. Olympians Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson are 40 and 36 respectively, with Gibb having the chance to become the first four-time Olympian in his country’s history. So does Phil Dalhausser, 36, the gold medallist from Beijing in 2008.

On the women’s side, will Kerri Walsh Jennings try to become a six-time Olympian? In addition to her three gold medals and one bronze on the beach, she competed for the USA indoor team at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

One player who has inspired the tour is 43-year-old John Hyden of the United States, who came close to qualifying for the Olympics with Tri Bourne, but did reach the World Tour Finals and finished with a bronze medal. Hyden said he will play at least one more year with Bourne and see then if he’s geared up for another Olympic run.

What we do know about the 2017 season is BeachMajors founder and CEO Hannes Jagerhofer wants to squeeze eight Major Series events into the calendar, with the season-opening tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, set for Feb. 7-12. The BeachMajors group will also host the World Championships in Vienna in midseason, and Jagerhofer said this summer that Cartagena, Colombia, could be the site of the 2017 World Tour Finals.

The FIVB is expected to hammer out the details of the 2017 season in the coming two months.

Pick up the phone right now before it's too late( Definitely Not suitable for kids)(For Mature Audience only)

Ms. Timi Yuro - She Really Loves You

She really loves you and how could you know
How she has waited for you to show her
How much you love her and what you would do
If she was your girl?

Now she really loves you, don't make her wait
Pick up the phone right now before it's too late
And tell her you need her, oh, tell her you care
And she'll be your girl

You'll never know the tears she would cry
If you would tell her, tell her a lie
Be sure you mean, mean all that you say
I know her heart, her heart can't be led astray

She really loves you, what else, what else can I say
You've heard my story, now you don't, you don't walk away
Oh, there's just one more thing before you go
I'm the girl who really loves you so

I love you, I love you, I love you

We Salute You Guys, RIP

Look around it, have you found it

Mr. Neil Young-- There's a World

There's a world you're living in
No one else has your part
All God's children in the wind
Take it in and blow hard

Look around it, have you found it
Walking down the avenue?
See what it brings
Could be good things
In the air for you

We are leaving
We are gone
Come with us to all alone
Never worry, Never moan
We will leave you all alone

In the mountains, in the cities
You can see the dream
Look around you
Has it found you?
Is it what it seems?

There's a world you're living in
No one else has your part
All God's children in the wind
Take it in and blow hard

You might want to take a seat while we drop this bombshell.

Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, citing a conflict over the celebrity couple’s six kids.

The 41-year-old actress’s lawyer Robert Offer said in a statement that the decision had been made “for the health of the family”.

He added: “She will not be commenting and asks that the family be given privacy at this time.”

According to US gossip site TMZ, Angelina filed the legal documents on Monday citing ‘irreconcilable differences’ and is now seeking custody of the children.

Sources connected to the couple said Angelina’s decision has been sparked by the way Brad was parenting the children, claiming she was “extremely upset with his methods.”

There is no mention of any ‘third person’ in the divorce papers – the decision is solely about Brad’s ‘interaction’ with their kids.

Angelina lists the date of separation as September 15, 2016, the TMZ claims.

The couple have been together since 2004, and married in August 2014.

Angelina is being represented by Laura Wasser, who recently repped Johnny Depp during his bitter divorce battle with Amber Heard.

Brad’s first marriage to actress Jennifer Aniston famously ended in 2005 as a result of a relationship with Angelina which blossomed on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith.

It’ll be the third divorce for Jolie, who was previously married to Johnny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton.

The couple haven’t been seen out in public together for months, and were last photographed together in November while plugging their movie By The Sea, which told the story of a warring married couple.

“It was our way of testing ourselves,” Angelina said recently. “We knew that if we could get through this, we’d come out even stronger and happier. And we did,’ she said of making the film.

“I don’t think we want to go through it again though.”

We don't know what to say. God bless.

Toronto, Canada, September 18, 2016 - Switzerland’s Nadine Zumkehr stood on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals podium and whispered something to her partner, Joana Heidrich.

“What an amazing way to end my career,” Zumkehr said to Heidrich, as a sold-out crowd applauded her for winning the silver medal. “This is a big, big privilege.”

Zumkehr, 31, who represented Switzerland at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, announced that the SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals would be her final tournament. She will continue to play for fun, but not competitively.

“I don’t know if I will ever find anything in my life that will give me so many emotions,” she said.

Zumkehr, who began her FIVB career in 2005, has played with Heidrich since 2013.

“She gave everything for this game,” Heidrich said. “This was the perfect moment to stop.”

Anouk Verge-Depre, who won the bronze medal in Toronto, grew up watching Zumkehr in Switzerland.

“She is one of the most successful players in our sport,” Verge-Depre said. “She is a role model to a lot of young girls.

Zumkehr was not the only player to announce her retirement in Toronto.

Canada’s Josh Binstock was able to announce his retirement in front of his home fans. Binstock, who represented his country at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, is a chiropractor when he’s not playing beach volleyball.

He was honored during the women’s medal ceremony, with adoring fans waving Canadian flags and chanting “Dr. Josh.”

“I’m glad that I wasn’t asked to speak, because I would have been too emotional,” said Binstock, 35. “It is so special that the timing of my career allowed me to do this at home.”

Fellow Canadian Ben Saxton, who finished fourth in Toronto, was asked about Binstock.

“I hope he stays involved with the sport because he has meant a lot to Canadian beach volleyball,” Saxton said.

In addition to the two athletes, a respected referee ended his career in Toronto.

Brazil’s Elzir Oliveira is retiring after more than 20 years of international refereeing. He was a member of the first class of FIVB referees in 1996. Since then, he has officiated 4,780 matches, including three Olympic Games and nine World Championships.

“He is one of the top, top referees ever,” said FIVB BVB Refereeing Commissioner Jose Casanova. “I am trying to keep him involved because we need his experience.”

This year Oliveira worked at the Rio Olympics, including the men’s bronze medal match. It was extra special because he was born in Rio.

“It was fantastic to end my Olympic career in my home city,” said Oliveira, who hopes to stay involved in the sport and help the FIVB in other ways.

His final assignment was the women’s gold medal match at the SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals. Afterwards, he was recognized on the court. The fans gave him a standing ovation, and he received hugs from the players and his fellow referees. Casanova presented him with an autographed volleyball.

“When I saw the crowd clapping, I got very emotional,” Oliveira said. “It was difficult not to cry.”

Zumkehr, Binstock and Mr. Oliveira---We gonna miss you guys. All the best. God bless.

Toronto Film Festival 2016 by Brent Lang

“La La Land,” Damien Chazelle’s musical ode to Los Angeles, captured the audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival after screening to standing ovations and rave reviews.

The film and stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are widely expected to be major Oscar season players. To snag the prize in Toronto, “La La Land” bested runner-ups “Lion” and “Queen of Katwe,” two inspirational dramas that also generated some heat up north.

The victory could bolster “La La Land’s” chances of picking up the movie business’ top prize. After all, five audience award winners have gone on to capture best picture, a group that includes “Slumdog Millionaire,” “12 Years a Slave,” “The King’s Speech,” “American Beauty” and “Chariots of Fire.” Lionsgate will release “La La Land” in theaters on Dec. 2. It marks Chazelle’s follow-up to his acclaimed 2014 indie, “Whiplash.”

Ben Wheatley’s “Free Fire” received the Midnight Madness audience award. The action thriller stars Brie Larson and screened along with other genre offerings. Raoul Peck picked up the people’s choice documentary award for “I Am Not Your Negro,” a look at one of writer James Baldwin’s unfinished works.

The audience award winners are voted on by festival-goers after public screenings. The festival also has several jury prizes, one of which recognized Pablo Larraín’s “Jackie,” a biopic about Jacqueline Kennedy. The film took the platform prize, which rewards superior filmmaking. “Jackie” entered the festival looking for distribution. Fox Searchlight beat out a number of bidders to land rights to the project and is expected to do a major awards push for star Natalie Portman.

Here are the other winners:

Dropbox Discovery Programme Filmmakers Award: “Jeffrey”

Short Cuts Awards (Canadian film): “Mutants”

Short Cuts Awards Best Short Film: “Imago”

City Of Toronto Award Best First Canadian Feature: “Old Stone”

Canada Goose Best Canadian Feature: “Those Who Make Revolution Halfway Only Dig Their Own Graves”

Fipresci Jury Prize, Discovery Section: “Kati Kati”

Rio Paralympics

by Nick ZaccardiSep 18, 2016

Tatyana McFadden, the U.S. track and field star of the Rio Paralympics, was shockingly beaten in a photo finish in her final event, the T54 marathon, on Sunday.

McFadden lost to China’s Zou Lihong, though they both completed the 26.2-mile course in Rio in 1:38.44. American Amanda McGrory took bronze in 1:38.45, the same time as the fourth-place finisher.

McFadden finished the Games with four gold medals and two silvers, the most medals by a U.S. track and field athlete at a Paralympics since Bart Dodson took eight (all gold) at the 1992 Barcelona Games.

The marathon may be McFadden’s best event, as she swept the Boston, London, Chicago and New York City Marathon wheelchair races in 2013, 2014 and 2015, plus the Boston and London Marathons so far this year.

In Rio, McFadden won the 400m, 800m, 1500m and 5000m and earned silver in the 100m. She and the U.S. were disqualified from the 4x400m relay. McFadden came to Rio with a shot at seven gold medals.

McFadden, 27, is now at 17 career Paralympic medals, including seven golds. One medal came at the Winter Paralympics, where McFadden took cross-country skiing silver at Sochi 2014.

McFadden’s back story is well-known in Paralympic and marathon circles. She was born in Russia paralyzed from the waist down due to spina bifida and adopted from a St. Petersburg orphanage at age 6.

NBC and the NBC Sports app will have Paralympics coverage Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.

Congrats to all of you! God bless!

Cyclist Bahman Golbarnezhad We Salute You

by Nick ZaccardiSep 17, 2016

Iranian cyclist Bahman Golbarnezhad died after crashing in a Rio Paralympic road race Saturday, according to the Iran Paralympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

Golbarnezhad, 48, crashed in the C4-5 road race at about 9:40 a.m. ET on a mountainous stretch of the course. He was descending a steep hill and is believed to be the first athlete to die at a Paralympics, according to The Associated Press.

He received emergency treatment at the scene and suffered cardiac arrest en route to Unimed Rio Hospital, where he died soon after arrival.

An investigation has been launched regarding the circumstances of his crash, according to the IPC.

Golbarnezhad’s family, which is in Iran, and the Iran delegation in Rio were informed of his death.

“This is truly heartbreaking news, and the thoughts and condolences of the whole Paralympic Movement are with Bahman’s family, friends and teammates as well as the whole of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of Iran,” IPC president Philip Craven said in a statement. “The Paralympic Family is united in grief at this horrendous tragedy which casts a shadow over what have been great Paralympic Games here in Rio.”

The Iran flag was lowered to half-mast in the Paralympic Village and will fly at half-mast at the Iran-Bosnia and Herzegovina sitting volleyball gold-medal match Sunday.

A moment of silence will be held during the Closing Ceremony.

Mr. Edward Albee We Salute You

by Reid Nakamura | September 16, 2016

Mr. Edward Albee, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright behind “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” has died at the age of 88.

According to the Associated Press, Albee died at his home in Montauk, New York.

Albee’s groundbreaking play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” was selected for the Pulitzer Prize in 1963, but was denied by the selection board due to its vulgarity. He later went on to win three Pulitzers throughout his career for “A Delicate Balance” in 1967, “Seascape” in 1975 and “Three Tall Women” in 1994.

The playwright was born Edward Harvey on March 12, 1928 in Washington D.C., and was shortly thereafter adopted by Reed and Frances Albee, who changed his name to Edward Franklin Albee III.

After attending multiple high schools and graduating in 1946, Albee enrolled in Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. He was soon expelled from the school for failing to attend classes.

Albee’s first play, “The Zoo Story,” was first staged in Berlin, then at the Provincetown Playhouse. The play won the 1960 Obie Award for Distinguished Play, as well as Distinguished Performance for star William Daniels.

He would then go on to write more than 25 plays, including “The Ballad of the Sad Cafe,” “Tiny Alice,” “A Delicate Balance,” “Three Tall Women” and “The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?,” among others.

The Edward Albee Society was not informed of the playwright’s passing, but David A. Crespy, who is also co-director of the University of Missouri Writing for Performance Program, told TheWrap on behalf of the organization, “He was the soul of American playwriting and fought to preserve it as an art form. He was an innovator, a challenging master teacher of the dramatist’s art, and the beating heart of the American Theatre.”

He continued: “I know that do many of us would never have been playwrights if it hadn’t been for Edward. He was a gift, a firebrand, a rebel, and one of the most generous theatre artists I have ever known. I am heartbroken.”

Mr. W.P. Kinsella We Salute You

by Thom Geier | September 17, 2016

Canadian writer W.P. Kinsella, whose 1982 novel “Shoeless Joe” was the basis for the beloved Kevin Costner movie “Field of Dreams,” has died at age 81.

The news was posted on Kinsella’s official website, but there were no details of when or how he died.

During his lifetime, he published nearly 30 books of fiction, nonfiction and poetry — but he is best known for his writing about baseball.

In addition to “Shoeless Joe,” Kinsella wrote “The Iowa Baseball Conspiracy” (1986), “Magic Time” (1988) and “Butterfly Winter” (2011).

He won wide acclaim for “Shoeless Joe” — particularly after director Phil Alden Robinson’s movie adaptation appeared in 1989 and retitled “Field of Dreams.”

The story followed an Iowa corn farmer who hears voices that command him to tear up his crops to build a baseball field. If he does, he believes that “Shoeless” Joe Jackson and other members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox might magically appear to play ball again.

The film version became a commercial hit, earning $64 million as well as three Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

Arbitrage pricing theory

In finance, arbitrage pricing theory (APT) is a general theory of asset pricing that holds that the expected return of a financial asset can be modeled as a linear function of various macro-economic factors or theoretical market indices, where sensitivity to changes in each factor is represented by a factor-specific beta coefficient. The model-derived rate of return will then be used to price the asset correctly - the asset price should equal the expected end of period price discounted at the rate implied by the model. If the price diverges, arbitrage should bring it back into line.
The theory was proposed by the economist Stephen Ross in 1976.

Model

Risky asset returns are said to follow a factor intensity structure if they can be expressed as:
r_{j}=a_{j}+b_{{j1}}F_{1}+b_{{j2}}F_{2}+\cdots +b_{{jn}}F_{n}+\epsilon _{j}
where
  • a_{j} is a constant for asset j
  • F_{k} is a systematic factor
  • b_{{jk}} is the sensitivity of the jth asset to factor k, also called factor loading,
  • and \epsilon_j is the risky asset's idiosyncratic random shock with mean zero.
Idiosyncratic shocks are assumed to be uncorrelated across assets and uncorrelated with the factors.
The APT states that if asset returns follow a factor structure then the following relation exists between expected returns and the factor sensitivities:
E\left(r_{j}\right)=r_{f}+b_{{j1}}RP_{1}+b_{{j2}}RP_{2}+\cdots +b_{{jn}}RP_{n}
where
That is, the expected return of an asset j is a linear function of the asset's sensitivities to the n factors.
Note that there are some assumptions and requirements that have to be fulfilled for the latter to be correct: There must be perfect competition in the market, and the total number of factors may never surpass the total number of assets (in order to avoid the problem of matrix singularity).

Arbitrage

Arbitrage is the practice of taking positive expected return from overvalued or undervalued securities in the inefficient market without any incremental risk and zero additional investments.

Mechanics

In the APT context, arbitrage consists of trading in two assets – with at least one being mispriced. The arbitrageur sells the asset which is relatively too expensive and uses the proceeds to buy one which is relatively too cheap.
Under the APT, an asset is mispriced if its current price diverges from the price predicted by the model. The asset price today should equal the sum of all future cash flows discounted at the APT rate, where the expected return of the asset is a linear function of various factors, and sensitivity to changes in each factor is represented by a factor-specific beta coefficient.
A correctly priced asset here may be in fact a synthetic asset - a portfolio consisting of other correctly priced assets. This portfolio has the same exposure to each of the macroeconomic factors as the mispriced asset. The arbitrageur creates the portfolio by identifying x correctly priced assets (one per factor plus one) and then weighting the assets such that portfolio beta per factor is the same as for the mispriced asset.
When the investor is long the asset and short the portfolio (or vice versa) he has created a position which has a positive expected return (the difference between asset return and portfolio return) and which has a net-zero exposure to any macroeconomic factor and is therefore risk free (other than for firm specific risk). The arbitrageur is thus in a position to make a risk-free profit:
Where today's price is too low:
The implication is that at the end of the period the portfolio would have appreciated at the rate implied by the APT, whereas the mispriced asset would have appreciated at more than this rate. The arbitrageur could therefore:
Today:
1 short sell the portfolio
2 buy the mispriced asset with the proceeds.
At the end of the period:
1 sell the mispriced asset
2 use the proceeds to buy back the portfolio
3 pocket the difference.
Where today's price is too high:
The implication is that at the end of the period the portfolio would have appreciated at the rate implied by the APT, whereas the mispriced asset would have appreciated at less than this rate. The arbitrageur could therefore:
Today:
1 short sell the mispriced asset
2 buy the portfolio with the proceeds.
At the end of the period:
1 sell the portfolio
2 use the proceeds to buy back the mispriced asset
3 pocket the difference.

Relationship with the capital asset pricing model

The APT along with the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) is one of two influential theories on asset pricing. The APT differs from the CAPM in that it is less restrictive in its assumptions. It allows for an explanatory (as opposed to statistical) model of asset returns. It assumes that each investor will hold a unique portfolio with its own particular array of betas, as opposed to the identical "market portfolio". In some ways, the CAPM can be considered a "special case" of the APT in that the securities market line represents a single-factor model of the asset price, where beta is exposed to changes in value of the market.
Additionally, the APT can be seen as a "supply-side" model, since its beta coefficients reflect the sensitivity of the underlying asset to economic factors. Thus, factor shocks would cause structural changes in assets' expected returns, or in the case of stocks, in firms' profitabilities.
On the other side, the capital asset pricing model is considered a "demand side" model. Its results, although similar to those of the APT, arise from a maximization problem of each investor's utility function, and from the resulting market equilibrium (investors are considered to be the "consumers" of the assets).

Implementation

Factors

As with the CAPM, the factor-specific betas are found via a linear regression of historical security returns on the factor in question. Unlike the CAPM, the APT, however, does not itself reveal the identity of its priced factors - the number and nature of these factors is likely to change over time and between economies. As a result, this issue is essentially empirical in nature. Several a priori guidelines as to the characteristics required of potential factors are, however, suggested:
  1. their impact on asset prices manifests in their unexpected movements
  2. they should represent undiversifiable influences (these are, clearly, more likely to be macroeconomic rather than firm-specific in nature)
  3. timely and accurate information on these variables is required
  4. the relationship should be theoretically justifiable on economic grounds
Chen, Roll and Ross (1986) identified the following macro-economic factors as significant in explaining security returns:
  • surprises in inflation;
  • surprises in GNP as indicated by an industrial production index;
  • surprises in investor confidence due to changes in default premium in corporate bonds;
  • surprise shifts in the yield curve.
As a practical matter, indices or spot or futures market prices may be used in place of macro-economic factors, which are reported at low frequency (e.g. monthly) and often with significant estimation errors. Market indices are sometimes derived by means of factor analysis. More direct "indices" that might be used are:
  • short-term interest rates;
  • the difference in long-term and short-term interest rates;
  • a diversified stock index such as the S&P 500 or NYSE Composite;
  • oil prices
  • gold or other precious metal prices
  • Currency exchange rates

Asset management

The linear factor model structure of the APT is used as the basis for many of the commercial risk systems employed by asset managers.
