TV Editor Marco Zappi We Salute You

by Variety Staff

Emmy-winning TV editor Marco Natale Zappia, who worked on shows including “All in the Family,” “Maude,” “The Jeffersons,” “The Sonny and Cher Show,” “Who’s the Boss?,” “Roseanne,” “Home Improvement” and “Boy Meets World,” died Sunday, December 22, in Ventura, Calif. He was 76.

Zappia won Emmys for CBS variety show “Hee-Haw” in 1971 and for special “Christmas in the Holy Land,” with Perry Como, in 1981. He earned an additional 18 nominations during a nearly four-decade career in which he edited thousands of hours of episodic television.

Zappia helped pioneer numerous technical advances in his field, including aiding in the research and development of the multi-cam Avid Editing System. He was the first to use the Avid to edit a multicam sitcom (“Home Improvement”).

He last worked on the ABC comedy “8 Simple Rules” from 2002-05.

Born in Los Angeles to Italian immigrants, Zappia owned a TV repair shop at one time. A broadcasting career that spanned nearly 40 years began with an engineering job at CBS in 1968.

Zappia was a longtime member of the Directors Guild of America, the Motion Picture Editors Guild, and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Most recently, he published his memoir, “Smartest Guy in the Room,” a reflection on his life and career in the entertainment business.

Zappia is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Carole Ann; a daughter; a son; and six grandchildren.

Per Marco’s wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial services. Condolences may be sent to Carole Ann Zappia, 2771 Bayshore Ave, Unit A Ventura, CA 93001.

Lisa Niemi Swayze Par Public.fr/O.M.

James Blunt and Sofia Wellesley Par Public.fr/ O.M.

Congrats! Also, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to both of you, families and your fans.

Michael Schumacher

Please pray for Michael Schumacher. God help him.

Mr. Ringo Starr and Ms. Chrissie Hynde --Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to both of you, families and your fans.

God bless.

Mr. Ringo Starr and Ms. Chrissie Hynde - Don't Hang Up

[Ringo:]
With my inside outside
Looking for a free ride
Waiting for the band to come

[Chrissie:]
Is it me or the drummin'
Or your guitar strummin'
Gotta tell me I'm the only one

[Ringo:]
I wanna sit here, drink beer
I really love you dear but there's a
Rent man knockin' at the door

[Chrissie:]
I got new shoes, new dress
Hair-do, I guess
You don't love me anymore

[Both:]
Don't hang up
Don't hang me up

[Ringo:]
When I'm out there rockin'
I'll be rockin' round the clock and
I will always come home to you

[Chrissie:]
While you're downtown playin'
I'll be uptown strayin' cause
That's what lonely women do

[Both:]
Don't hang up
Don't hang me up

Love is strange, love is sad
But love is everything we have
It's gone today, gone tomorrow
Why is that the way it has to be
For you and me?

Love is strange, love is sad
But love is everything we have
It's gone today, gone tommorow
Why is that the way it has to be
For you and me?

[Ringo:]
I got good news/bad news
The record deal fell through

[Chrissie:]
Sorry, I'll be out of town
Wait dear/not here

[Both:]
Don't hang up
Don't hang me up
Don't hang up
Don't hang me up
Don't hang up
Don't hang me up

The Beatles--Don't ever change

You never wear a stitch of lace
Your powder's never on your face
You're always wearing jeans, except on Sunday
So, please, don't ever change
No, don't you ever change
I kind of like you just the way you are

You don't know the latest dance
But when it's time to make romance
Your kisses let me know you're not a tomboy
So, please, don't ever change
No, don't you ever change
Just, promise me you're always gonna be
As sweet as you are

I love you when you're happy
I love you when you're blue
I love you when you're mad at me
So how can I get tired of you?

But lots of other girls I've seen
They know how to treat guys mean
But you would rather die than ever hurt me
So, please, don't ever change
No, don't you ever change
Just, promise me you're always gonna be
As sweet as you are

Please, don't ever change
Don't you ever change
Please, don't you ever change
Don't you ever change

Miley Cyrus and Cara Delevingne

source:eonline.com/Instagram

By Rebecca Macatee (Definitely Not suitable for kids)

Miley Cyrus doesn't just lick sledgehammers and varying inanimate objects--she licks Cara Cara Delevingne's tongue, too!
On Thursday, Dec. 26, the "Adore You" singer tweeted a racy photo of herself doing just that. The filtered shot shows Miley, 21, French kissing the Victoria's Secret Model, also 21, as a graphic rainbow appears to beam from behind them both..
"LOVE!!!!!We finally got the filmed developed Mush," Miley wrote. (As you can see, from M.C.'s hair, this 'do is from several weeks ago.)

The former Disney star and her British socialite BFF don't just get together and make funny faces, though. Last month, the ladies hit up an Amsterdam coffee shop (for some caffeine and chitchat, of course). It seems, based on Miley's hair and both girls' all-black ensembles, that this was where they swapped spit for the aforementioned picture.
Miley is certainly not Cara's only famous friend (she's got a whole posse!), but these two do seem to share a particular quirky sense of humor.

Just yesterday, for example, Cara recreated Queen Elizabeth II's speech with a turkey on her head, a whipping pig, bacon lipgloss and a slew of other not-typically-regal props. Miley, a fellow fan of the onesie, hammed it up on the holiday with her family, recreating their endearingly cheesy Christmas photo from years ago.
Twerk!

How right he was. Now 75 and still going strong, even he could surely never have predicted quite how uncommon his life would prove to be, or how churned up those smooth sands might become.

A natural eccentric, Peter O'Toole's legendary love of drinking only accentuated his off-beat behaviour, leaving the world agog at his escapades when fame threw a spotlight on them.

This was a man who travelled the world yet never wore a watch or carried a wallet. Nor, on leaving his house, did he ever take his keys with him.

"I just hope some ____ in," he'd say.

More than once, when someone was not in, O'Toole found himself having to explain to the police why he was breaking into his own property.

Peter O'Toole was born in 1932 in Connemara, Ireland, for which he retained a lifelong affection, although he moved to Leeds at the age of just one.

The neighbourhood where O'Toole grew up was rough, and three of his playmates were later hanged for murder. "I'm not from the working class," O'Toole liked to say. "I'm from the criminal class."

Although it was his mother, Connie, who instilled in O'Toole a strong sense of literature, by far the biggest influence in his young life was his father, Patrick, a bookie who was often drunk.

One day, Patrick stood his young son up on the mantelpiece and said: "Jump, boy. I'll catch you. Trust me."

When O'Toole jumped, his father withdrew his arms, leaving the boy splattered on the hard stone floor. The lesson, said his father, was "never trust any ____".

Later, father and son often got plastered together, such as the occasion in London when Patrick came down from Leeds in 1959.

The O'Tooles got slaughtered and as everyone retired to bed, Peter lay spread-eagled on the floor, "not asleep, but crucified", as he later said.

Patrick tried lifting his flagging son to his feet, but to no avail. Instead he opened another bottle and joined him on the floor. That's where the pair were found the following afternoon.

O'Toole's childhood was dogged by ill health, and although he could read by the age of three, he did not attend school regularly until he was 11.

He left two years later with no qualifications and one ambition: to sell second-hand Jaguars.

When this failed to materialise, he landed a job on his local newspaper, the Yorkshire Evening News.

Starting as a tea boy, O'Toole did a stint as a reporter, covering stories with the likes of future columnist Keith Waterhouse and author Barbara Taylor Bradford.

He quickly concluded, however, that this was not the career for him, a view shared by his editor.

"I soon found out that, rather than chronicling events, I wanted to be the event," he said.

To help achieve this, he landed a scholarship at RADA in a class that include future stars Alan Bates and Albert Finney.

In 1959, O'Toole was cast as a Cockney sergeant in the play The Long And The Short And The Tall at the Royal Court Theatre.

His understudy was a young Michael Caine, and one Saturday night after the show O'Toole invited him to a restaurant he knew.

Eating a plate of egg and chips was the last thing Caine remembered, until he woke up in broad daylight in a strange flat.

"What time is it?" he inquired. "Never mind what time it is," said O'Toole. "What ____ day is it?"

It turned out that it was five o'clock in the afternoon two days later. Curtain-up was at eight.

Back at the theatre, the stage manager was waiting for them with the news that the restaurant owner had been in and banned them from his establishment for life.

Caine was about to ask what they'd done when O'Toole whispered: "Never ask what you did. It's better not to know."

Most evenings after the show, O'Toole would enjoy a long walk around Covent Garden. Sometimes if he was in the mood, he'd scale the wall of Lloyds bank.

The first time he took his future wife, the actress Sian Phillips, on one of these nocturnal jaunts, she was startled when he began his ascent of the north face of the building.

But after a few nights she came to accept that, by O'Toole's standards anyway, it was quite normal.

It was the sheer unpredictability of the man that had attracted her to him in the first place.

He once showed up in a sports car yelling: "Get your passport, we're off!" Heading for Rome, they took a wrong turning and ended up in Yugoslavia.

By the end of the trip, Sian's nerves were in shreds as a result of O'Toole's manic driving.

After he'd once taken a friend to Amsterdam, the unfortunate woman later confided to Sian: "He should never drive anything. He's lovely, but I thought we were going to die."

Over the years, cars and O'Toole have never been the best of friends. One woman who accepted a lift from him swore afterwards that she would never do so again.

During the journey, he had ignored a Keep Left sign on the grounds that it was "silly", and also narrowly avoided driving down a flight of steps.

O'Toole's first proper film credit was a small role in Walt Disney's 1959 movie Kidnapped. Amazingly, on his very first day he overslept, and the angry film company had to phone the home of the actor Kenneth Griffith, where O'Toole was staying, to find out where he was.

Griffith popped his head round O'Toole's bedroom door - he was fast asleep. "O'Toole," he shouted. "You're 45 minutes late."

Lifting his bedraggled head off the pillow, O'Toole asked if his car had arrived.

"No," said Griffith. O'Toole's head crashed back onto the pillow. "No car, no me," he said.

"From that day to this, there has been a Rolls-Royce waiting for him," Griffith once revealed. Even on his first day, O'Toole was behaving like the star he would later become.

The star of Kidnapped was the Australian actor Peter Finch, a mighty drinker. Not surprisingly, he and O'Toole became great friends.

During one of their legendary boozing sessions in Ireland in the Sixties they were refused a drink because it was after closing time.

Both stars decided that the only course of action was to buy the pub, so they wrote out a cheque for it.

The following morning, after sobering up, the pair rushed back to the scene of the crime. Luckily the landlord hadn't cashed the cheque and disaster was averted.

O'Toole and Finch remained friends with the pub owner, and when he died his wife invited them to his funeral.

Both knelt at the graveside as the coffin was lowered in, sobbing noisily. When Finch turned away, unable to stand it any more, O'Toole saw his friend's face change from a look of sorrow to one of total astonishment.

They were at the wrong funeral; their friend was being buried 100 yards away.

In his late 20s, O'Toole became the youngest leading man ever at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, where he took the opportunity to seal his growing reputation as a hellraiser.

At one after-show party O'Toole held court on stage sitting on a throne, sustained by two pedal bins on either side of him, one full of beer, the other containing hard liquor into which he would alternately scoop two pint mugs.

But his tearaway existence was taking its toll, and O'Toole's doctors warned him that he needed to cut out the booze.

For the rest of the season, O'Toole made a great show of downing large quantities of milk, although he remained sceptical.

"I get drunk and disorderly and all that, but I don't think it's true that there is any danger of me destroying myself," he said.

When director David Lean was casting the lead in Lawrence Of Arabia in 1959, he favoured O'Toole, but producer Sam Spiegel had reservations because of his reputation.

Having seen his screen test, however, he had to admit they'd found their Lawrence.

Lawrence Of Arabia occupied O'Toole for two years, filming in seven different countries.

By the end of it, he'd lost 2st, received third-degree burns, sprained both ankles, torn ligaments in both his hip and thigh, dislocated his spine, broken his thumb, sprained his neck and been concussed twice.

But his extraordinary performance made him a star. Lawrence Of Arabia was a world-wide smash when it opened in 1962 and was hailed as one of cinema's true masterpieces.

"I woke up one morning to find I was famous," he said. "I bought a white Rolls-Royce and drove down Sunset Boulevard, wearing dark specs and a white suit, waving like the Queen Mum.

"Nobody took any _____ notice, but I thoroughly enjoyed it."

His family life, however, was suffering. When one of his daughters was ill, he paid her a visit in the nursery. Days later, the child asked Sian: "You know that man who came to see me, Mummy - who is he?"

After that, Sian made a point of pinning up stills of O'Toole's current film or stage guises to avoid any misunderstandings.

The filming of the 1968 historical drama The Lion In Winter, in which O'Toole starred with Katharine Hepburn, was notable for a series of bizarre incidents.

Shooting a scene on a lake one day, O'Toole trapped his finger between two boats. "Bloody agony it was," he said. "Took the top right off."

O'Toole carried the tip of his finger back to shore, dipped it into a glass of brandy to sterilise it and then pushed it back on, wrapping it in a poultice.

Three weeks later he unwrapped it and there it was, all crooked and bent.

"I'd put it back the wrong way, probably because of the brandy, which I drank," explained O'Toole.

Another time, he awoke at 4am to discover that his bed was on fire.

"At first I tried to put the thing out myself, but I couldn't read the small print on the fire extinguisher," he said.

"By the time the first fireman arrived, I was so glad to see him I kissed him."

O'Toole didn't have much luck with fires. During a cottage holiday in Wales with Sian, he had decided to cook, although she had never seen him do so before.

"I can make the best French toast," he told her. Minutes later the stove exploded into flames.

They tried to extinguish the fire, but it was impossible, and they were driven out into the garden, where they watched in the rain as the kitchen burnt down.

Meanwhile, O'Toole's film career was hardly going from strength to strength. One of his commercial flops was the 1968 movie The Great Catherine, a moribund historical effort that hardly got a cinema run.

During filming, O'Toole's habit was to go back to his dressing room when not required, ostensibly to rest and learn his lines.

In reality, he opened a bottle of champagne and chatted to his minder, who drove him around and got him home safely after a night on the sauce.

One afternoon, director Gordon Fleming sent an assistant to fetch O'Toole.

The assistant found the dressing room empty, with a TV showing horse-racing from Sandown Park, not far from the studio.

Suddenly, the TV camera zoomed in and there, in the crowd, was O'Toole cheering on the horses.

A car was dispatched to bring the errant actor back to the studio. O'Toole arrived all smiles, thinking it was one big joke.

During the Sixties, O'Toole had blazed a mighty trail of hell-raising, but as the decade came to a close he was approaching his 40s and some wondered if he was getting tired of lugging around his reputation as a drunkard and general crank.

"The damage has been done," he lamented. "There is a legend, there is a myth: to protest is daft."

In 1975, when he was 43, matters were taken out of his hands. An abdominal irregularity he'd persistently ignored (he hated doctors) finally erupted and he was rushed into hospital for a major operation.

For years, O'Toole refused to say what the problem was. "My plumbing is no one's business but my own," he said.

In fact, O'Toole came as close to dying as you can without doing so. "It was a photo-finish, the surgeons said," he said.

There was so little of his digestive system left that any amount of alcohol could prove fatal. Having come so close to death, O'Toole was determined to live each day to the full.

"The time has come to stop roaming," he said. "The pirate ship has berthed. I can still make whoopee, but now I do it sober."

That was more than 30 years ago. Now, in his mid-70s, Peter O'Toole has outlived all his fellow hellraisers and is still very much in the game.

In 2004, he played Priam in the epic Troy, which also starred Orlando Bloom, Brad Pitt and Sean Bean, a self-confessed O'Toole aficionado.

"The first time I met him on the set," recalled Bean, "he was in a robe with a cigarette holder and he said: 'Sean, how are you, dear boy?' He was just how I imagined him to be."

Last year, O'Toole notched up his eighth Oscar nomination for his performance in Venus, the story of an almost wholly platonic romance between an elderly thespian and a 21-year-old girl.

O'Toole was delighted at the script and at his casting.

"No one better for a dirty old man who falls for a sluttish young woman," he said. Sadly, the coveted Oscar still eludes him, although he remains hopeful.

So O'Toole is the last surviving British reprobate. "The common denominator of all my friends is that they're dead," he said.

"There was a time when I felt like a perpendicular cuckoo clock, popping up and down in pulpits saying: 'Fear no more the heat o' the sun.' They were dying like flies."

But like all the other hellraisers, he has never once regretted the mistakes he made.

"I loved the drinking, and waking up in the morning to find I was in Mexico," he said. "It was part and parcel of being an idiot." Long may he continue.

Kristen Stewart by Bruna Nessif

Coffee does usually make one's day ten times better.

Kristen Stewart seemed in good spirits while grabbing a cup of joe with a few friends in Echo Park, Calif., last weekend, after spending some time in London earlier this month.

The Twilight star continued rocking her laidback style, wearing her signature Mercenaries hat with skinny jeans, a gray Brooklyn sweater, black circle shades and black converse sneakers.

The casually clad K.Stew was even photographed flashing a big smile while chatting alongside her gal-pals with her hot brew in hand.

We're not sure what was said to cause the actress' large grin, but we can definitely think of at least one think she should be happy about.

The 23-year-old actress is officially the new face of Chanel's Paris-Dallas 2013 Métiers d'Art Collection (which will be released in May 2014). Chanel confirmed the exciting news on Twitter Dec. 11, posting a picture of Kristen and Karl Lagerfeld, the creative force behind Métiers d'Art.

On Dec. 10, Kristen and her Runaways costar Dakota Fanning were among those celebrating the vintage Americana-inspired collection at the Chanel show at Dallas' Fair Park. Other attendees included Poppy Delevingne, Alexa Chung, Anna Wintour and André Leon Talley.

Get it, K.Stew!

Ms. Joan Fontaine We Salute You

In most of the obituaries of Joan Fontaine, the acclaimed actress who died last Sunday in Carmel, Calif., at 96, if her starring role with Harry Belafonte is mentioned at all, it will be as an afterthought. That may be perfectly all right, because the film, “Island in the Sun,” cannot rank among her best performances, particularly when compared to her Oscar-winning role in “Suspicion.”

But among African-American filmgoers—and some white ones with racist inclinations—Fontaine is remembered for co-starring as Belafonte’s lover, however unrequited their romantic overtures. The film, according to historian Donald Bogle, is marred by compromises.

“Because of its theme of miscegenation,” he writes, “‘Island in the Sun’ was controversial even during the shooting.” Bogle’s focus here is on Dorothy Dandridge, the famed Black actress who is paired with white actor John Justin. This was in 1957, only three years after Brown v. the Board of Education, and any lovemaking on the screen between mixed couples was taboo, especially for theater owners in the South.

At least Dandridge and Justin are seen holding hands and dancing, which is about as close as they get to consummating their romance; Belafonte and Fontaine, except for furtive glances, don’t even get this far, though Belafonte ingeniously finds a way to deliver a subtle kiss to his co-star.

In the evenings, after acting all day, Belafonte and Fontaine began to think of ways to subvert the film, to convey their highly restricted feelings.

“We had another romantic scene the next day,” Belafonte recalled in his memoir, “My Song,” after another frustrating day on the set. “In this one, I was to slice open a coconut with a machete and offer it to Joan so she could sample the milk inside.

“What I did the next day was hand it to her and watch, intensely as she drank,” he continued. “Then I took it back, my eyes on the place where she’d put her lips. Slowly and deliberately, I put my lips where hers had been. Then I took the sip that consummated the moment. For anyone who followed it carefully enough, the scene would have, in its own way, a passionate climax.”

Belafonte’s memoir contains more interesting comments on the film, both on and off camera, and for that, you’ll have to get his book. It might be good to know how Fontaine felt about all this because she tended to speak very openly about things, including the contentious relationship with her equally talented sister Olivia de Havilland.

If possible, get a copy of Fontaine’s autobiography, “No Bed of Roses,” too. Perhaps there she offers some further insight on her relationship with Belafonte. During an interview with People magazine in 1978, she discusses many of the men she romanced on film, as well as her four husbands. Nothing was said there about Belafonte..

We gonna miss you Ms. Fontaine. RIP

Next year, U.S. wages will increase by about 1.5 percent after adjusting for inflation, according to ECA International estimates. In some parts of the world, wages will grow at double this rate, and in several countries even more. Ukrainian workers are expected to earn roughly 6.1 percent more in 2014 than they did this year, adjusted for inflation. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 10 countries with a projected 3 percent, or more, real wage growth.

In many of the countries with the highest real wage increase, previously high inflation rates are expected to stabilize. For example, inflation in Ukraine, the country with the highest wage increase, was nearly 16 percent in 2009, but fell to just 0.6 percent in 2012. For both 2013 and 2014, prices are expected to remain fairly stable in the country.

Similarly, inflation rates exceeded 10 percent in Bangladesh, Kenya, Pakistan and Vietnam in 2011. All of these countries, among the top 10 for wage increases, are projected to have inflation below 8 percent next year.

Many countries where wages are rising are also expected to experience strong economic growth. According to the IMF forecasts, seven of the 10 countries with the greatest expected wage growth will have GDP growth faster than its 3.6 percent projection for global growth next year.

Another factor potentially leading to higher real wage growth in several of these countries is government-mandated increases in wages, typically the minimum wage.

Based on wage figures provided by ECA International’s Salary Trends Survey 2013/2014, 24/7 Wall St. determined the 10 countries where wages are projected to rise the most in 2014, net of inflation. Nation-level statistics on inflation, gross domestic product and other macroeconomic figures are from the International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook. GDP per capita figures are adjusted for purchasing power parity. We excluded Argentina from our rankings despite its high nominal and real wage growth because it is widely believed to be underreporting inflation figures. In February, Argentina became the first nation to be censured by the IMF for its economic data.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with Prince George

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince George by Jordana Ossad

Queen Elizabeth II spoke about her precious great-grandson Prince George, while fondly reflecting on the past year during her annual Christmas speech.

"Here at home, my own family it is a little larger this Christmas," the 87-year-old monarch said in a video message prerecorded in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace. "As so many of you will know, the arrival of a baby gives everyone the chance to contemplate the future, with renewed happiness and hope," the Queen said around the five minute mark about Prince William and The Duchess's son. "For the new parents, life will never be quite the same again."

The speech features never before seen footage of Prince George taken after his christening as four generations of royals posed for the official portraits. The Queen said the christening was a "happy occasion."

The Duchess of Cambridge is seated on a couch while bouncing her little boy on her lap in the behind-the-scenes clip. She also gently removes his tiny hand from his mouth.

The Duke of Cambridge also holds his son while posing for a photograph with the Queen and his father Prince Charles. Kate can be heard sweetly telling her son "Good boy!" from the side. This portrait is the first photograph of the Queen, and the next three kings. It is also on display behind the Queen during her speech.

Prince George enjoyed a memorable and "lovely" Christmas with his family at Sandringham, north of London.

Jeffrey Ian Pollack We Salute You

Jeffrey Ian Pollack, the director of Booty Call and Above the Rim and a producer on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, has died. He was 54.

Pollack was found on the Greenbelt in Hermosa Beach, Calif., early on the morning of Dec. 23 by an unidentified woman out jogging who called the police, according to the Manhattan Beach Patch. Pollack was already deceased. He was dressed in jogging clothes and carrying an iPod, which was still playing the Eagles when the police arrived, Hermosa Beach police captain Tommy Thompson told EasyReaderNews.com Police do not suspect foul play, and it is believed he died of natural causes while exercising. He was an avid runner and softball player.

Pollack directed three movies: Above the Rim (1994), the story of a rising basketball star and his troubled brothers starring Duane Martin and Tupac Shakur; Booty Call (1997) with Jamie Foxx, Vivica Fox and Tommy Davidson; and the 1999 David Spade vehicle Lost & Found.

He was also a producer on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Along with friend and business partner Benny Medina, he had a hand in the creation of the show, which was inspired by Medina’s experiences living with Motown Records founder Berry Gordy Jr. while attending Beverly Hills High School.

In the early ‘90s, the pair formed the management and production company Medina/Pollack Entertainment, which later became Handprint Entertainment. Their clients included Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey and Tyra Banks. Handprint closed in 2008.

In recent years, Pollack teamed with entertainer Jeff Beacher to put together his Beacher's Madhouse variety shows, including a long-running stint at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. A new version at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas opens Dec. 27 with Miley Cyrus hosting the premiere.

Pollack graduated from the University of Southern California School of Film. After college, he traveled through Asia for three years before returning to the U.S. and entering the entertainment business.

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light” (Is 9:1).

This prophecy of Isaiah never ceases to touch us, especially when we hear it proclaimed in the liturgy of Christmas night. This is not simply an emotional or sentimental matter. It moves us because it states the deep reality of what we are: a people who walk, and all around us – and within us as well – there is darkness and light. In this night, as the spirit of darkness enfolds the world, there takes place anew the event which always amazes and surprises us: the people who walk see a great light. A light which makes us reflect on this mystery: the mystery of walking and seeing.

Walking: this verb makes us reflect on the course of history, that long journey which is the history of salvation, starting with Abraham, our father in faith, whom the Lord called one day to set out, to go forth from his country toward the land which he would show him. From that time on, our identity as believers has been that of a people making its pilgrim way toward the promised land. This history has always been accompanied by the Lord! He is ever faithful to his covenant and to his promises. “God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all” (1 Jn 1:5). Yet on the part of the people there are times of both light and darkness, fidelity and infidelity, obedience, and rebellion; times of being a pilgrim people and times of being a people adrift.

In our personal history too, there are both bright and dark moments, lights and shadows. If we love God and our brothers and sisters, we walk in the light; but if our heart is closed, if we are dominated by pride, deceit, self-seeking, then darkness falls within us and around us. “Whoever hates his brother – writes the Apostle John – is in the darkness; he walks in the darkness, and does not know the way to go, because the darkness has blinded his eyes” (1 Jn 2:11).

On this night, like a burst of brilliant light, there rings out the proclamation of the Apostle: “God’s grace has been revealed, and it has made salvation possible for the whole human race” (Tit 2:11).

The grace which was revealed in our world is Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary, true man and true God. He has entered our history; he has shared our journey. He came to free us from darkness and to grant us light. In him was revealed the grace, the mercy, and the tender love of the Father: Jesus is Love incarnate. He is not simply a teacher of wisdom, he is not an ideal for which we strive while knowing that we are hopelessly distant from it. He is the meaning of life and history, who has pitched his tent in our midst.

The shepherds were the first to see this “tent”, to receive the news of Jesus’s birth. They were the first because they were among the last, the outcast. And they were the first because they were awake, keeping watch in the night, guarding their flocks.

Together with them, let us pause before the Child, let us pause in silence. Together with them, let us thank the Lord for having given Jesus to us, and with them let us raise from the depths of our hearts the praises of his fidelity: We bless you, Lord God most high, who lowered yourself for our sake. You are immense, and you made yourself small; you are rich and you made yourself poor; you are all-powerful and you made yourself vulnerable.
On this night let us share the joy of the Gospel: God loves us, he so loves us that he gave us his Son to be our brother, to be light in our darkness.

To us the Lord repeats: “Do not be afraid!” (Lk 2:10). And I too repeat: Do not be afraid! Our Father is patient, he loves us, he gives us Jesus to guide us on the way which leads to the promised land. Jesus is the light who brightens the darkness. He is our peace. Amen.
